It’s another week where we have a little bit of everything. I’ve finally caught up my Colorado Tech Weekly Email Apology Tour after learning that I haven’t been checking the email account for over a year. I’m fairly certain the new site is gonna work. I’ve learned about domain registration things… oh and there’s tech news of every kind! Hardware, satellites, blockchain, social media, healthcare, municipal news, etc. This week we get a little bit of everything including some bad news about Maxar and Colorado Springs.

As members of the Colorado tech community, things that affect us directly are talked about daily by legislators at the state and federal level. This week those topics are artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency which are very much tech related. However it’s important to realize that the other big topics such as our booming growth, traffic, income-inequality, etc. are issues that we are a part of so it’s important for us to pay attention to our effect on Colorado and keep involved so that we can do what we can to mitigate and help Colorado’s issues.

Not every issue can be/should be fixed with technology, but if you like working with technology you like solving problems so I think we can still help.

Colorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10 technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a good President’s Day!)!

There’s a lot that I like about this week’s news and events. One thing I look forward to doing on the new ColoradoTechWeekly.com is doing features on companies, people and organizations. To get that started I got to visit with Allison and Griffin of Full Body Sound at SolderWorks in Westminster last week and I got to feel music and it was pretty cool! They will be at the New Tech Colorado event in Boulder on the 21st.

Speaking of events, I like seeing combo events like the Boulder React Coding Night also on the 21st and my work would be directly impacted by the Visual Studio and Azure meetups too!

But then there’s the news! I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before about buzzwords in Colorado. They’re not just buzzwords! This week we have blockchain, diversity, security and autonomous robots! And this is just the top 10 stories! I love it!

I’ve been a software developer for just over a year now. My first year was definitely a constant battle against imposter syndrome. Now that I have experience, that imposter syndrome is gone right? Hahahaha-no. It turns out that imposter syndrome isn’t just for newbies. It can be a constant issue for all developers and I like talking about it for the same reason I enjoy talking about mental health. Both issues are things that most people have to deal with and both issues are things that most people don’t talk about. This is why I’m excited to see that a few Colorado tech groups are getting together on February 12 to talk about imposter syndrome openly.

Infinicept is hiring again for a Software Engineer so we can bring our team of developers up to 6! I enjoy working for Infinicept partly because as an employee of a small company I get to help shape the culture. We’re a team that enjoys achieving together, learning together and helping each other out. I joke with my co-workers that I feel like I’m telling candidates what they want to hear when they ask about our culture. Interested? Let us know!

Infinicept is hiring again for a Software Engineer so we can bring our team of developers up to 6! I enjoy working for Infinicept partly because as an employee of a small company I get to help shape the culture. We’re a team that enjoys achieving together, learning together and helping each other out. I joke with my co-workers that I feel like I’m telling candidates what they want to hear when they ask about our culture.

I’ve noticed that there’s been a lot of companies hiring and people starting new jobs recently. It’s neat to see what people and companies bring to the table that is more than just skills, compensation and benefits. It feels like those things are an expected part of getting and keeping talent but the important part is the way you feel about a company or person? Maybe “how they make you feel” is not the right way to put it, but I’m talking about the things that are hard to put in a job posting or resume that makes managing talent (yours and others’) challenging and interesting.

Colorado Tech Weekly #293: Board Games, Operation Code and Denver Startup Week and how they’re all connected

I run a tech blog series in my spare time so it will come to no surprise that I am a big nerd. After playing board games with friends on Friday (we escaped the Forbidden Island!) I was considering ways to nerd out during the rest of the year. My patient wife went with me to check out the new gaming store near us in Littleton (It’s called The Gaming Goat and it’s pretty cool) and I found a program for Genghis Con.

Genghis Con is a long running gaming convention in Colorado. When I went to the Genghis Con website I saw that it was created by Vaquero Digital Services. I had a feeling that Genghis Con is the type of organization to use a local web development company so I decided to look into Vaquero Digital Services. Vaquero Digital Services makes an app called Time Wrangler which I remember hearing about at Denver Startup Week from Chris Martinez. I got to meet Chris at Denver Startup Week because he was there helping to promote the Denver chapter of Bunker Labs which is an organization to help military veterans start businesses. I’m a Marine Corps veteran. Chris is an Army veteran. This leads me to my highlighted event this week, the Operation Code Relaunch! Operation Code is an organization dedicated to helping military veterans and their families start their careers in tech so if you’re looking to recruit veterans (and I know you are cuz you’ve contacted me), check that event out.

So that is how board games, Operation Code and Denver Startup Week are all connected. It’s connected through veterans and community… and mostly Chris Martinez.
