Colorado Tech Weekly #207: Computer Science Electives, The Tech Job Search and Open Source

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a happy Memorial Day!)!

I’m proud of myself for finally writing a blog post that wasn’t a Colorado Tech Weekly post. I need to do that more often. My latest post offers to let you design your own entry level developer by asking for opinions about which Computer Science electives I should choose this fall semester. I also wonder how much CS electives really matter to the people that do the hiring. Please let me know!

This week I’m highlighting the BuiltinColorado post about 6 tech companies that are really looking for developers. It’s an encouraging thing to see however I still think there’s a skill gap that can only be solved with time and experience. Looking at the jobs listed, it looks like getting my first developer job is going to be the hardest job to get. Although it is encouraging to see companies like Boulder’s NetApp advertise jobs for college graduates.

Next week I might actually make it to a meetup I’ve been wanting to go to for a long time.  I’ve always wanted to go to a DOSUG meetup because I want to get involved in open source development but jumping into a project without a mentor has always kinda felt like showing up to someone else’s garage with my own tools and a bewildered look.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #142: Awesome Business/Education Collaborations

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week has three different stories about collaboration between businesses and education organizations and it’s AWESOME!

This spirit of collaboration is what I love about the Colorado technology community. People will try to tell you that, to get ahead in business, you have to be cutthroat and that it’s survival of the fittest. They’ll tell you that it’s a game that means your competitors loss is your gain. You may be able to win playing that game, but that is not a game I like to play. The growth of the Colorado tech community is proof you don’t have to play that way. There are other ways to win and I like that we play the fun way.

Colorado Tech Weekly #141: The slow, steady hum of progress

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

At work we have this air conditioning unit that makes a low buzzing noise. The only time we really notice it is when it turns off or starts up otherwise it’s just a constant source of background noise we get used to.

The Colorado technology community is starting to feel that way to me and in the best way possible. I look ta these headlines this week and I see constant progress. Constant hiring, constant releases, constant adjustments. Just because the general growth in Colorado tech appears constant and fades into the background, just like the air conditioner, we shouldn’t take it for granted.

Colorado Tech Weekly #83: More predictions! More jobs! Fewer CES stories!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

It’s the Monday after the big Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and I only have one CES related story! I think Wayin’s Jamey Wood might be on to something in the below BuiltinColorado article “What’s next for Colorado tech in 2015” when he says Colorado should get more involved in the physical realm. More robotics! More devices! I’m all for it!

Until then, I guess we’ll just have to deal with only having more jobs and more optimism. That works just fine for me.

Colorado Tech Weekly #66: A week of big deals and big ideas

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Want big deals? We got ’em! Want big ideas? We got those too! Want to make a big deal about big ideas? Denver is doing just that this week with Denver Startup Week. To make the best out of Denver Startup week check out my 10 links to get you ready for Denver Startup Week with tips and information from local tech news sources and companies.

I have some big ideas of my own. I’m working towards becoming a software developer through my classes at Regis and on my own in my off time and I’ve noticed a trend in how programming is taught. We teach people to code, but not how to make apps. I say let’s teach people how to make apps, not just write code! I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
